Overview

The expression lo que is similar to what, that which, or the things which. The construction is:

lo que + verb

Lo que yo digo es verdad.
That which I say is true.

¿Tú oyes lo que yo oigo?
Do you hear what I hear?

Eso es lo que busco.
That is what I am looking for.

Qué is used in other expressions without lo. The construction of each is shown below:

Qué + adjective

Gracias, qué bueno.
Thanks, that's good.

¡Qué bonito fue!
How beautiful it was!

¡Qué bonita bicicleta, Andrés!
Nice bike, Andrés!

¡Qué hermosa es la Tierra!
How beautiful is the land!

¡Qué hermosa es la vida!
How beautiful is life!

Qué + adverb

¡Qué bien bailas!
How well you dance!

¡Qué bien! ¿Te gusta?
Good! Do you like it?

¡Qué mal!
How bad!

Qué + noun

Qué pena que no te conocí antes.
What a shame I didn't meet you sooner.

¡Qué lástima que ella no pudo venir!
What a shame that she could not come!

¡Qué lindo día!
What a beautiful day!

Mire, qué lindo este bungalow.
Look, how beautiful is this bungalow.
