Overview

To conjugate a regular -ar verb in the preterite tense, replace the infinitive ending with the correct ending for each pronoun. The table below shows the endings for regular -ar verbs.

yo é
aste
Ud./ él/ ella ó
nosotros amos
vosotros asteis
Uds./ ellos/ ellas aron

Preterite forms of the verb hablar (to speak):

hablar (full conjugation)

yo hablé (I spoke)
hablaste (you spoke)
Ud./él/ella habló (you/he/she spoke)
nosotros (as) hablamos (we spoke)
vosotros (as) hablasteis (you guys spoke)
Uds./ellos/ ellas hablaron (you all/they spoke)

Sentences using hablar in the preterite tense

Ya te hablé de eso.
I already spoke with you about that.

Vimos la película de la que nos hablaste.
We saw the movie you spoke to us about.

Se habló mucho de esta exposición.
Much was said about this exposition.

Sentences using other -ar verbs in the preterite tense

Llegamos a casa muy tarde anoche.
We got home very late last night.

Mis niños jugaron en el parque todo el día.
My children played in the park all day.
