Tener que means to have to.
Tener is irregular in the preterite.

Tuve que ir a la junta.
      I had to go to the meeting.

Tuviste que comprar la medicina.
      You had to buy the medicine.

Él no tuvo que ser expulsado.
      He didn't have to be expelled.

Nosotros tuvimos que hablar con el abogado.
      We had to talk with the lawyer.

Tuvisteis que volver al día siguiente.
      You all had to return the following day.

Tuvieron que reconstruirlo.
      They had to rebuild it.
