Overview

The verb ser is irregular in the present tense.

yo soy I am
tú eres you are
Ud./él/ella es you/he/she is
nosotros/as somos we are
vosotros/as sois you guys are
Uds./ellos/ellas son you all/they are

Ser is often used to express the norm, or a characteristic or quality that is unchangeable.

 Soy ingeniera.
      I am an engineer. (feminine)
 Tú eres listo.
      You are smart. (masculine)
 Este río es muy ancho.
      This river is very wide.
 Nosotros no somos maestros.
      We are not teachers.
 Vosotros sois estudiantes.
      You all are students.
 Mis ojos son azules.
      My eyes are blue.
