Spanish Grammar Writing in Spanish Esdrújulas
Overview

Esdrújulas are the words that have the stress (acento) on the third to last syllable. They always have a "written accent":

lámpara - lamp
política - politics
cómodo - comfortable
águila - eagle

Sobreesdrujulas are the words that have the stress (acento) on any syllable before the third to last. They always have a "written accent" with the exception of the words ending in "mente" which follow the same rule as without the ending "mente".

tómatelo - drink it
cuéntamelo - tell me
únicamente - only
fácilmente - easily
