Dialogue 1

A Spanish adjective is used to modify or describe a noun. The number (singular or plural) and the gender (masculine or feminine) of an adjective depends on the noun.

Adriana: Creo que estoy viendo al hombre de mi vida.
I believe that I am seeing the man of my life.

Nicolás: Déjame adivinar. Ese joven moreno y alto.
Allow me to guess. That young man, dark and tall.

Adriana: No, no me gustan los hombres morenos.
No, I don't like dark men.

Nicolás: ¿Hablas del hombre rubio con pelo largo?
Are you speaking of the blond man with long hair?

Adriana: Sí, me encanta. Es buen mozo y esbelto.
Yes, he enchants me. He is handsome and slender.

Nicolás: Se ve un poco gordo y bajo.
He looks a little fat and short.

Adriana: ¡No seas envidioso! Tiene una nariz respingada perfecta.
Don't be jealous! He has a perfect upturned nose.

Nicolás: También se ve un poco presumido.
Also he looks a little smug.

Adriana: No seas hablador. ¿Cómo te gustan a ti las chicas?
Don't be so chatty. How do you like women?
(Don't be so chatty. What type of women do you like?)

Nicolás: Me gustan las de pelo negro largo, delgadas e inteligentes.
I like women with long black hair, thin and intelligent.

Adriana: Creo que pides mucho.
I believe that you are asking for a lot.

Nicolás: Pues me gustan así de bonitas… ¡como tú!
Well I like beautiful women...like you!

The words you use to describe others may change depending if you are speaking about a man or a woman.

Él es delgado.
He is skinny.
(delgado = masculine)
(delgada = feminine)

Él es bajito.
He is short.
(bajito = masculine)
(bajita = feminine)

Él es muy guapo.
He is very handsome.
(guapo = masculine)
(guapa = feminine)
