Overview	Non-Spanish speakers often confuse the words qué and cuál. ¿qué? - what?; which? ¿cuál, cuáles? - what?, which? We use often use qué in questions: For a definition/explanation ¿Qué es? What is it? ¿Qué pasa? What's up? / What's wrong? ¿Qué busca? What is he/she looking for? What are you looking for? (formal) Before nouns in a question ¿Qué fecha es hoy? What is today's date? ¿Qué hora es? What is the time? ¿Qué película te gusta más? Which movie do you like the most? We use often use cuál / cuáles in questions: Before a form of ser (to be) ¿Cuál es la llave? Which is the key? ¿Cuál es tu dirección? What is your address? ¿Cuál es el número? What is the number? Among obvious choices: ¿Cuál preferirías tomar, agua o café? Which would you prefer to drink: water or coffee? You have seen from the examples that qué and cuál can both translate to "what" and "which". However, they have specific uses in Spanish. Let’s take a look at each of them. Use in Questions: ¿Qué? 1. definitions and explanations (“what”) ¿Qué piensas de la posibilidad de la vida en otros planetas? What do you think about the possibility of life on other planets? ¿De qué estás hablando?¹ What are you talking about? ¿Qué comisteis ayer? / ¿Qué comieron ayer? What did you all eat yesterday? ¿Qué hizo el perrito?² What did the doggy do? ¿Qué es “tartamudo”? What is “tartamudo”? What does “tartamudo” mean? 2. Before nouns (“what”; “which”)³ ¿A qué restaurante quieres ir? What restaurant do you want to go to? ¿De qué marca es tu chaqueta? What brand is your jacket? ¿Qué clase de cosa te asusta? What type of thing frightens you? ¿A qué escuela asisten ellos?⁴ What school do they attend ¿Qué película te gusta más? What movie do you like most? ¿Cuál? / ¿Cuáles? 1. Before the verb ser (to be). (“what”; “which”) ¿Cuál es tu película favorita?⁵ What is your favorite movie? ¿Cuál es tu opinión? What’s your opinion? ¿Cuál es tu problema? What is your problem? ¿Cuál fue la serpiente que mató a Cleopatra? What was the serpent that killed Cleopatra? ¿Cuál sería tu mejor cualidad? What would be your best quality? ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre tu amigo y tu novio? What is the difference between your friend and your boyfriend? 2. When there is an obvious choice. (“what”; “which”) ¿Cuál prefieres, Facebook o Twitter? Which do you prefer: the Facebook or Twitter? ¿Cuál viste?⁶ Which [movie] did you see? ¿Cuál de los dos comiste? Which of the two [things we’re talking about] did you eat? 3. ¿Cuáles? is used when the answer is plural. (“what”; “which”) ¿Cuáles son tus colores favoritos? What are your favorite colors? ¿Cuáles de las personas en la fiesta conocías? Which of the people in the party did you know? Use in Non-Questions Qué 1. In statements to mean: “what”⁷ No entiendo qué quieres decir con eso. I don’t understand what you mean by that. Nadie sabe qué le gusta hacer a Ana. No one knows what Ana likes to do. 2. before adjectives to mean: “How ___!” ¡Qué interesante! How interesting! ¡Qué emocionante! How exciting! ¡Qué elegante estuvo tu vestido! How elegant was your dress! / Your dress was so elegant! 3. Before nouns to mean:”What a __!” ¡Qué lástima! What a pity! What a shame! ¡Qué bonitos angelitos! What nice/beautiful little angels! ¡Qué ojos tan claritos!⁸ What light-colored eyes ¡Qué hombre más rico! What a very rich man! Cuál 1. In exclamatory clauses to mean: “What a state of” ¡Cuál le han reducido las desgracias! How (to what a state) misfortunes have reduced him! ¡Cuál la ví! How (in what a state) did I see her! Notas: 1. perro is ‘dog’ and ‘-ito’ or ‘-ita’ on the end of something means it is ‘little’ or ‘dear’ 2. Notice that we have to put ‘about’ in the front of the sentence. In Spanish we cannot have a preposition at the end of the sentence. 3. In Latin American, cuál and cuáles are used before nouns sometimes; however, qué is considered standard. 4. “asistir a” is “to attend”; the a is needed when a place is after asistir 5. Since we're not asking for a definition, we use cuál to ask "Which of the colors is your favorite?" 6. If you're having a conversation about movies and it's implied this question would work. Otherwise, you'd have to say: "¿Cuál de las películas viste?" or "¿Qué película viste?" 7. You might see the "lo que" used to mean "what" in non-questions also.
